Rolex - a little about its history
The journey started in 1905, when Hans Wilsdorf and his brother in law Alfred Davis founded "Wilsdorf and Davis". At that time, however, they were not making Rolex as we know it. The business consisted of importing Hermann Aegler's Swiss movements to England where they were placed in quality cases.
In 1908, the trademark Rolex was registered, and the office in Switzerland was opened. The origin of the word is unknown. Rolex was awarded with Class A precision certificate by Kew Observatory. In 1915, the company named Rolex was registered, and in 1919, the company moved to Geneva Switzerland. The company moved out of England because of high taxes and export duties on silver and gold.
After the death of his wife in 1944, Wilsdorf established the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation. All Rolex shares were left with foundation in order to make sure that part of the profit would go to charity. Today the company is still owned by that private fund.
Rolex began selling the Rolex automatic movement in 1931. The self-winding Rolex made time keeping more reliable by keeping the power from the mainspring. In 1968, after collaborating with a consortium of 16 Swiss watch manufactures, Rolex created Rolex Quartz Date 5100.
